Planned Parenthood Has a New President... And the Same False Talking Points

This week, Planned Parenthood announced that Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen would be its next president. She replaces Cecile Richards, who stepped down from leading the country’s largest abortion provider earlier this year.

Under Richards’ leadership, Planned Parenthood saw its healthcare services and number of clinics decrease, even while profits continued to soar (thanks to millions of dollars in taxpayer funding). But perhaps more notable are the many scandals under Richards’ leadership. You might remember:

  • Planned Parenthood officials being caught on video negotiating prices for baby body parts.
  • The multiple lawsuits exposing misuse of taxpayer funds by Planned Parenthood.
  • The failure of Planned Parenthood to report the sexual abuse of young girls brought to its clinics.

Instead of addressing these issues in her introductory video, however, Dr. Wen continues to rehash the same talking points we’ve heard from Planned Parenthood time and time again.

“I wanted to fight for our most vulnerable individuals…”

Planned Parenthood officials often make this claim, but apparently miss the very obvious irony: Are they not taking the lives of the most vulnerable – unborn children? On top of that, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky filed suit against a law that bans abortions based solely on a child’s disability, race, or sex. If Planned Parenthood were truly about protecting the most vulnerable, it would be promoting these types of laws, not fighting them.

And what about its failure to report the abuse of young girls brought to its clinics? In 2015, Alliance Defending Freedom released a report demonstrating a pattern of documented Planned Parenthood incidents involving sexually abused minors in seven different states. How is that fighting for the most vulnerable?

“[W]hat we are doing is mainstream medical care.”

While Planned Parenthood likes to pretend that it offers women’s healthcare, such as prenatal care and mammograms, the facts tell a different story. Planned Parenthood focuses on abortions (specifically by enforcing abortion quotas), which is where over half of clinic revenue comes from. It doesn’t do mammograms and provides hardly any prenatal care. The abortion giant actually removed “prenatal care” from some of its location pages after a Live Action investigation found that, of the 97 Planned Parenthood facilities they called, only five actually offered prenatal care.

Also, if what Planned Parenthood is doing is “mainstream medical care,” then shouldn’t Planned Parenthood facilities be held to the same standards as other health facilities to ensure the best possible care? Yet, abortion advocates have a record of fighting laws that require abortionists and abortion facilities to comply with the same health and safety standards as similar outpatient, surgical centers. These standards include having hallways wide enough for a gurney, adequate staffing, and proper sterilization procedures.

Fighting for the most vulnerable and providing quality healthcare are honorable goals. But Planned Parenthood has never been about that. Planned Parenthood is about profit…no matter what. And while Cecile Richards may be gone, her same old false talking points are not. It’s just Dr. Wen who is now repeating them.
